Monday, November 04, 2002 I'm trying to figure out what my problem is. I've been walking around with a huge chip on my shoulder all day. I'd blame erratic sleep schedules, but I think that's only a small fraction of it. It's really a case of raging impatience with everyone in the entire world. There's usually a little of that no matter what, but I feel like I've been marching under the banner of "cut the shit" a lot more than usual lately. Does anybody remember Animal Crack-Ups with Allen Thicke? That Wesley Crusher never won any hedgehogs. The web editor for my paper quit without notice the other day. I'm thinking this may be the extra push I need to learn HTML rather than propping myself up on the crutch of blog tools. I won't be a web template junkie any more! Or I'll just hire someone else. I kind of need the money, though. Also, I like the idea of eventualy replacing the entire staff with myself. I briefly thought I was going to give it up and let someone else deal with all the hassle. I won't get course credit for doing the paper next semester, and that was going to be my excuse to bow out. I think I'm going to stick with it, though. Despite the white-hot fury or beige-cold boredom that teh job inspires, it's pretty easy money, and I generally get to set my own hours. I still fantasize about quitting and getting a job as a pizza waitress, though. So, the building my mate and I took over on our first date is going to get turned into a 150-bed emergency hypothermia shelter. Before that, it had sat vacant (with parts of it heated) for twenty years, even though there were homeless people freezing in the park across the street. When we went in there, the district was hearing plans for turning it into condos, luxury housing, and high-rent office space. It was only because congress specifically mentioned it (above and beyond the ridiculous number of other abandoned buildings DC has) that they were hearing plans of any kind. Because it's designated as an emergency shelter, it's only going to be open on the nights that are designated as being potential hypothermia emergencies. It's not a huge victory by a long shot. They need shelters year round, and more than that, they need affordable housing so that people aren't forced onto the street. Nonetheless, it's something. Direct action gets the goods! posted by Frenzy Lohan | 11/04/2002 11:27:00 PM 0 comments |
